POTTING SOIL

POTTING SOILS & SUPPLIES

Coconut Pith Fiber
Also called coir pith fiber, or simply coir, this is a natural, renewable resource that is a by-product of the coconut processing industry in Sri Lanka. Coir is extremely porous which allows for superior water and nutrient holding capabilities and thus makes an excellent component for growing and propagation mediums. Coir has a unique cell structure that gives it the structural strength to last for up to four years.  A potting soil that has coir in it instead of peat moss will be easier to hydrate, and will not shrink away from the container walls when it dries out. Coir fiber has a moderate pH of 6 and is more neutral than peat moss, pH of 3.5-4.5.  Resists bacterial mold and fungal growth.  We are offering this material as a replacement for peat moss which is strip mined from an ecologically sensitive area in Canada and as a result is no longer carried by our store.   Available in 1/3 cu. ft and 5 cu. ft bricks.

Hydrating the bricks: Place a 1/3 cu. ft brick in an empty bucket along with 5 quarts of water.  Allow the water to absorb, generally 30 minutes, then squeeze out any excess water and fluff the material up before using.  The brick should have expanded into 8 times its original size.  When hydrating the large block you can either place the entire piece into a trash can or suitable container along with 18-19 gallons of water, or you can saw off individual pieces and soak them as they are needed.

Perlite
Perlite is a naturally occurring siliceous ore that has been quickly heated to 1600F which causes it to expand and then burst like popcorn.  It is this “popping” that creates the unique, porous structure of perlite and thusly enables perlite to have outstanding air and water retention capabilities.  Perlite is commonly added to potting soils and seed starting mixes in order to enhance the aeration, water retention and loft characteristics of the soilless mediums.  Perlite is the white crumbly material that is found in potting soils.  Available in 8 qt and 4 cu, ft bags.

Vermiculite
Vermiculite is a mined ore that is flaky and micaceous in appearance and contains an interlayer of water within its structure.   As the raw ore is quickly heated to 870 C,  the water flashes into steam, and the flakes expand into accordian-like particles many times their original size.  The end result is a fluffy, light weight product that can hold several times its own weight in water, and even when thoroughly wet, there is sufficient air, enabling roots to breath and grow.  We sell a medium sized, horticultural grade vermiculite that is suitable for both building your own potting mediums or improving the water and oxygen retaining capabilities of existing soils.  Available in 4 cu. ft bags.
