WILDFLOWER SEED MIXES

CALIFORNIA COASTAL MIX- A mixture of annual and perennial species well-adapted to coastal and coastal inland conditions below 2500’ elevation. Will provide many months of spring color with or without irrigation.  Grows 2 – 3’ tall. Contains: Beach Evening Primrose, Farewell-to-Spring, Mountain Garland, Chinese Houses, California Poppy, Globe Gilia, Bird’s Eye, Dwarf Goldfields, Tidy Tips, Golden Lupine, Sky Lupine, Arroyo Lupine, Sticky Monkey Flower, Baby Blue Eyes, Showy Penstemon, Blue Eyed Grass.  Seeding rate: 1 TBS covers 20 – 25 sq ft, one pond covers approximately 2200 sq ft.

CALIFORNIA COASTAL SAGE SCRUB MIX- A blend of grasses, flowers and shrubs for revegetation of soils and slopes in our coastal environment.  There is a quick to germinate grass included in the mix that protects the soil and allows coverage for the slower to develop perennials that will provide permanent coverage in the years to come.  This is designed as a non-irrigated mix, but regular water will help foster establishment and prolong the blooming period.  Height ranges from 12 -54”. Contains: Deerweed, Purshing Lotus, California Sagebrush, Beach Evening Primrose, Chinese Houses, Bush Sunflower, California Buckwheat, Golden Yarrow, California Poppy, Small Fescue, Coast Goldenbush, Dwarf Goldfields, Arroyo Lupine, Mission Red Monkeyflower, White Sage, Black Sage, Blue-Eyed Grass, Purple Needlegrass.   Seeding Rate:  1 TBS covers 15 sq ft, one pound covers 850 sq ft.

CALIFORNIA NATIVE MIX- A blend of annual and perennial wildflowers and native shrubs.  May be used for irrigated and non-irrigated sites, will flower for most of the year when watered.  Grow 2 -3 feet tall. Contains: White Yarrow, Elegant Clarkia, Chinese Houses, California Poppy Globe Gilia, Bird’s Eye, Dwarf Goldfields, Tidy Tips, California Blue Bells, Five Spot, Mission Red Mimulus, Arroyo Lupine, Golden Lupine.  Seeding Rate:  1 TBS covers 20-25 sq ft, 1 pound covers approx. 2200 sq ft.

LOW PROFILE MIX- This is a mixture of low growing annual and perennial species that will provie many months of bright Spring color in a non-irrigated situation, or year-round color when watered. Plants range in height from 6 – 24” tall. Contains: Calendula, Sweet William, African Daisy, Dwarf California Poppy, California Poppy, Gazania, Dwarf Goldfields, Tidy Tips, Sweet Alyssum, Birds-foot trefoil, Dense Flowered Lupine, Baby Blue Eyes, California Blue Bells, Catchfly.   Seeding rate: 1 TBS covers 20-25 sq ft, I pound covers approximately 2200 sq ft.

SLAM DUNK MIX- Here is Matt’s very own blend of California native wildflowers that are a sure-fire bet to germinate.  This mix will come up quickly and then last late into the spring, and even beyond if watered regularly.  Broadcast the seeds onto a freshly raked area of dirt, and then gently re-rake to lightly cover the seeds. Contains: California Poppy, Scarlet Red Flax, Purplenet Toadflax and Clarkia ‘Farewell-to-Spring’.  Seeding rate: 1 TBS covers 20 – 25 sq ft, one pound covers approximately 2200 sq ft.

CALIFORNIA NATIVE WILDFLOWERS

Achillia millefolium– WHITE YARROW   A low growing ground cover plant with dark green, fern-like leaves.  Sends up 1’-3’ flower stems that hold clusters of minute white blooms.  A native to coastal CA.  Fast growing with moderate water needs.

Asclepias fascicularis- CA NARROW-LEAVED MILKWEED  Hardy perennial that grows easily from seed.  Many stems, up to 3’ long rise every year from perennial root.  Broad clusters of white/ pink flowers appear in summer and attract numerous monarchs.  Needs good drainage and little water.

Clarkia amoena- FAREWELL-TO-SPRING  This easy seeding annual gives off a dramatic display of medium sized pink/white flowers in late spring through early summer.   A true California native that thrives in a low water condition, full sun location. Grows up to 4’ tall.

Eschscholzia caespitosa- DWARF CA POPPY   A true CA native that is found in coastal, desert and inland regions.  Golden-yellow, 1-2” flowers, appear in the spring on annual plants that are under 12” high.  This plant reseeds well and can establish a nice, fire retardant ground cover that has low water requirements.

Eschscholzia californica-CALIFORNIA POPPY This popular California native can be witnessed in its orange splendor all across the state during the spring, and again less dramatically in the fall. The plant grows 1-2’ tall and can be a perennial in coastal or non-freezing areas.  Easy to grow from seed.  Can be used as a ground cover and has fire retardant properties.  Low water requirements.

Layia platyglossa-TIDY TIPSAn annual flowering ground cover that grows up to 3’ tall.  The showy 1-2” flowers appear in spring.  A California native that can survive with low to medium water in coastal and inland areas.

Linaria reticulata– PURPLE-NET TOADFLAX  A low growing, annual flower, that is typically less than one foot tall. Vibrant, bright purple/yellow flowers bloom during the summertime.  A non-native plant that does well with little water.  Is easy to start from seed, and then reseeds itself readily.

Lupinus bicolor- MINIATURE LUPINE This is a low growing, less than 1 foot, lupine that makes a great, fire-resistant ground cover that re-seeds itself well and can naturalize after several years of moderate seeding.  A true CA native that can be found in both coastal and inland habitats.   Bluish-purple, 1/2” flowers appear on 2-5” spikes in the early spring.

Lupinus succulentus-BLUE LUPINEThis is a true CA native that is found in coastal, desert, and inland areas.  Grows to 3 feet and has spikes of blue flowers with white highlights.  Seeds should be scarified before planting, this will greatly improve germination.

Nemophila menziesii– BABY BLUE EYES A low growing annual that produces a solitary, 1-2” blue flower in the spring. Once established, Nemophila will reseed itself well and over time can create a colorful little patch. This is a true CA native and is found in coastal, desert, inland and mountain areas.

Phacelia campanularia- CALIFORNIA BLUEBELLS A low-growing, 6-18” tall, annual that shows small blue flowers in spring.  This CA native is found in coastal, desert and inland areas, has low water requirements and can be seeded to create a fire- resistant ground cover. To germinate, rake the seeds into the top inch of a freshly prepared garden bed or soil.

Salvia apiana- WHITE SAGEA beautiful, fast growing, gray-white leaved plant that is drought tolerant and thrives in a rocky, well-draining soil.  Can grow 3-5 feet tall and produces spikes of lavender/white flowers in the late spring.  This is a plant that the Chumash people used both medicinally and spiritually.

Sisyrinchium bellum- BLUE-EYEDGRASS This is a perennial, clumping grass that grows 1-2 feet tall, produces small, blue to purple colored, single flowers that appear in early spring.  This is a true CA native that can be found along the coast, in inland valleys and deserts and upon the slopes of our tallest mountains.  Blue-eyed grass makes a good ground cover, has low water needs, fire retardant properties and will tolerate a wide range of soil types.
